With NRL CEO Todd Greenberg stepping down yesterday, attention in media circles and among fans turns to who replaces him in the top job.

Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Abdo is the acting CEO - and is among one of the many candidates being put forward. He'll essentially be auditioning for the role over the coming months.

Phil Gould has left Penrith in recent years but is still well-heeled in the game as a Channel 9 personality - but has said publicly he would not take the role.

Fox League speculates Paul White (Broncos), Blake Solly (Rabbitohs, previously Super League UK), and Dave Donaghy (Storm) are all possibilities, as well as current NSWRL boss Dave Trodden and head of the Accor Hotel Group, Simon McGrath. McGrath was a candidate in 2016 when Greenberg replaced Dave Smith.

There's also a school of thought current Chairman Peter V'landys could step down from the Commission to take on the role, or possibly even become an Executive Chairman, however that seems unlikely. He told the Sydney Morning Herald this week that he's made it clear he won't do it, pointing to the need for segregation between board and management.

The SMH reports that Souths boss Solly is keen to oversee the club's transition post-Shane Richardson along with Wayne Bennett's departure in 2021, so is unlikely to take the job. The same report suggests White and Donaghy are best supported to step up from the 16 clubs.
